Welcome to the Site: So, What Are We Doing Here?

Updated: Apr 15

I have compiled some future ideas and plans for the Nebraska to Chiang Mai site that have been outlined below. While these are just my beginning thoughts and planned directions, I would love feedback and comments from readers who would like to pitch ideas or interests!

Hi! Sawad dee kha! Welcome to one of my first (of hopefully many) blog posts! If you've found yourself at this point and are now asking yourself "Why am I on this awesome site? It's basically the coolest thing I've ever seen but what's the point?" I am here to provide an answer, and the answer is actually fairly simple. I have started this blog with a desire to share my wife and I's experience moving from Omaha, Nebraska USA to Chiang Mai, Thailand. We are expecting to have many new experiences and spend time adjusting to an entirely new culture. I have started this blog with the goal as a fun, interactive way to keep family & friends back home informed on our journey, but I hope that our adventure can inspire someone else who has the desire to live abroad.

It is basically an undeniable fact at this point that we are living in a strange, unprecedented time. I'm sure you have noticed and don't need me to tell you this (but if not surprise!). Lately, I've found myself struggling with the idea of impact or what we can do as a singular person to make any kind of meaningful difference in a world that is increasingly hostile and volatile to anyone perceived as a societal "other". There are so many forces that seem insurmountable right now, chief among them include: global violence, falling economy, uncertain job markets, rising hate and bigotry, sickness, disease, famine, billionaires exercising illegal control, the US President openly supporting Nazis, just to name a few. While I have come to the conclusion there is not much that I am able to do to change the current state of the United States government, I can at least provide a window into a new world and perspective that is very different than what I grew up in. I have been thinking about what kind of content and experiences I would have wanted to read about as a young, lesbian woman living in the American Midwest, and I came up with the idea of this blog. With this site, I hope that my experiences and challenges will foster connections and make visitors feel like they are connected with us along our travels.

Those who know me personally know I'm not really a social media person. I posted on Facebook during the required teen cringe years, but social media had never had much of an appeal to me beyond that era. Regardless, I am going to give it the old college try, this time with my own type of social media through this site. I have never thought about creating a blog prior to this and I am definitely feeling like I am outside my comfort zone. I've always had the opinion that in order to grow we must be willing to move outside of our usual comfortability. Hopefully this site will be entertaining and informative to those who are interested in living outside of the US and are curious as to the process that we went through.

Overall, the Nebraska to Chiang Mai blog site will strive to portray a digital journal chronicling the experiences, challenges, and triumphs of leaving behind the comforts of home to embrace a new way of life. Through the power of words, captivating photography, and engaging Thai centric experiences such as cooking, holidays, media, customs, etc. the site offers a glimpse into the personal odyssey of one couple as they navigate the cultural nuances and intricacies of a new home. What sets this blog apart is also its focus on catering to a niche audience - individuals who hail from the heartland of the USA, specifically Nebraska, and are drawn to Thailand (Hopefully you had heard of it as like.... a country prior to the White Lotus season, but either way welcome). By attempting to connect with this demographic in mind, I am hoping to foster community and camaraderie.

While I progress with getting this site up and running, I would be forever grateful if you could help me with just one teeny tiny little mini thing.... Answer one survey question? I have listed some of my current ideas for website content below. Feel free to vote for your favorite topic idea (or more than one favorite!). Please also comment below if there are any topics you are more/less interested in and also to say hi so I can get to know who some of my readers are!

As always, thank you for supporting us and having a vested interest in us and our well-being! We appreciate anyone who has found themselves on the site and hope you feel a warm, welcoming vibe while visiting :)
